What is Castle Marrach?

Castle Marrach is an online game quite different from most others, in that it focuses on cooperative storytelling, multiple players role-playing characters to develop overlapping and interacting plots. This is not a game in which players fight monsters, solve puzzles, and gather treasure ... there are no 'levels' ... there is no 'winning'. There may be monsters, of a sort ... and puzzles, of a sort ... and treasures, of a sort ... but they are more subtle than in most online games, and require social interaction and cooperation with other characters in order to even learn of their existence.

It is not a game in which arms, magic, or access to the Queen are common or easy to attain. The majority of characters in the castle will never hold a real sword, and even fewer will ever learn a magic spell. Those who do bear arms, learn magic, or enter the Queen's court do so through hard work and good role-playing ... it does not happen overnight. Most game time is spent in talking with other characters to learn of what plots are currently happening and move forward one's own plots.

In Castle Marrach, rather than racing through rooms, slaying demons and grabbing whatever objects they may find in order to gain power, players construct characters with goals and aspirations, loves and hates, and play them out in the Castle Marrach society. Power comes primarily from influence, and influence is acquired primarily through earning the respect of Her Majesty Queen Vivienne and her court. This respect, in turn, can be gained through various avenues, including castle guilds, organizations, and alliances. But even those characters without power play interesting roles in the way plots unfold in the game, and all types of personality can be interesting, if responsibly role-played.

The society of Castle Marrach is complex and can be intimidating for some new players, as they try to find a way in. But for those who want to truly role-play in a medieval fantasy setting, the game is well worth the effort ... and the complexity of the social network becomes one of the more interesting aspects of the game!
