A great square hall filled with the scents of roasting meat and savory spices.
The room is so huge that two thick pillars are needed to prop up the high
ceiling. On the other side of the pillars you can see a smaller section of the
dining hall to the east, where a warm blaze is roaring in a fireplace.
Candelabras fill the hall with bright cheerful light.

The Dining Hall is richly decorated as if for a great occasion. Garlands of
fresh white flowers provide a festive air, and large blue and white banners
hang from the walls. The tables and benches are pushed to the sides of the room
to make room for a dais in its center, which has been brought in to provide a

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Arrion recites:

High atop Mount Arden where roses still grow.
A castle is crowned in a tiara of pure ice and snow.
Her Gracious Queen Vivienne hath opened her doors.
To bring warmth and welcome to men, women and lores.

[Bertram straightens.]

For one of the many, a story has just given start.
Tis here dearest listener that I now shall impart.
The tale of two lovers destined by fate.
Brought together in romance by Her Majesty's mystical gate

Hidden amongst centurion doors and grand strength bound walls.
Courtier and commoners walk together through grandeur halls.
Awakened by the warming touch of early morning dawns.
Seeking the company of others like wide-eyed fauns.

[Sir Bragi smiles approvingly.]

A stir of an echo, from deep within did call.
For here within so many doth Awaken from the darkened fall.
Searching for answers to memories unsolved.
T'was here upon a balcony heartache was resolved.

A whisper, a movement, a smile to share.
Showed a weary heart, true love could be there.
Alone but together two smoldering flames did arise.
To capture the love, burning desire its primary prize.

For apart they were nothing, but sorrow without gain.
Afraid to surrender to past visions and harsh pain.
But what has past is now gone, and the present remains.
A couple accepting of the fortunes of a hearts retains.

[Bertram eyes Arrion.]
[Bertram glances at Sir Bragi.]

Now dear listener as my heart doth bubble with joy and glee.
I ask you take a moment to give your hearts thoughts flee.
Look about you and take in breath the faces that make part.
Of the newly given life before you, a fresh way to start.

[Sir Alrik gazes at Arrion.]
[Sir Bragi nods.]

To accept in grace and glory of the finery we wear.
To give thanks to the wonders our Gracious Queen did declare.
Our home I now speak of in this simple rhyme.
I pray but another moment you listen of your time.

[Bertram slouches.]

For while the winds blow cold and cutting to the skin in the courtyards.
The refectory and gathering halls bring welcome to minstrels and bards.
Warm flames do greet the wanderer with care.
And tempting palettes of refreshments bid the gazer to dare.

[Launfal smiles.]

Of our hosts until this eve remained unseen and away.
Whilst we wander long corridors thoughts leading a stray.
In solitary paths we seek enlightment to share.
A souls thoughts and purpose we struggle to bear.

But we are our own keeper of fate, honor and face.
And gifted we are to receive a life of no worry and grace.
I say to you all as you listen this night.
Take heart in your life now, find a purpose with which to fight.

[Bertram glances at Launfal's pocket watch.]

Be it an actor of the stage, or of the poet's hypnotic stance.
A weaver of mystical arts, or a graceful bladed dance.
A brewer of potions, a painter of masterful pieces.
A green thumbed gardener of fragrant flowered creases.

No matter the journey, no matter the path.
Here in our home we take merit like calculated math.
For somewhere in history, some day they shall read.
Champions of thoughts and dreams have so decree.

Here is our beginning, here we shall live and find end.
And here dearest listener this rhyme I now promise I amend.
Love, hatred, joy, strife, questioning and understanding are claimed.
Each other and none other we are eager to be blamed.

Our stage is now set, the pieces are laid.
The actors are ready the lighting is played.
Our destiny is untouched, our desires without name.
Tis in the halls of Castle Marrach we play our life game.

cape, a pair of blue shoes, a blue tunic and a pair of white hose.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Punzel recites:

Martel woke in a castle cold
one gray and wintry morn,
his body wrapped in linen rags,
his memories all forlorn.

He wandered maze-like corridors
and met a seamstress there.
She clothed him in shirt, pants, and boots,
tied back his long dark hair.

He met some gentle folk anon
and talked with them awhile.
Their memories were likewise gone,
and yet they spared a smile.

The castle, so forbidding once,
now showed a friendly scene,
and all beneath the watchful eye
of Vivienne, our Queen.

But lo! A villain entered then
to challenge Martel's bravery.
A snorting man with beady eyes --
his name was Victor Savory.

[Sir Bragi smiles appreciatively.]
[Martel smiles.]
[Sir Alrik smirks.]
[Punzel relaxes slightly.]
[Launfal sighs softly.]
[Petris chuckles.]
[Leto chuckles.]
[Andrew grins.]
[Bertram raises his arched eyebrow.]

When Victor spoke against the Queen,
the man was but a fool.
Defend her honour Martel must,
and so he called a duel.

[Sir Bragi listens to Punzel.]
[Twulf smiles.]

Just newly out of linens,
no memory of swordsplay,
Martel's strong limbs would have to fight
in but a week and a day.

So Martel practiced with his sword,
helped by true Arrion
who was his second for the fight.
The duel arrived anon.

[Punzel smiles at Arrion.]
[Arrion smiles at Punzel.]
[Martel smiles proudly at Punzel.]

Martel and Victor entered, proud,
the Duellists' Practice Room,
and all the good folks gathered there
to hope for Victor's doom.

Shocked whispers spread throughout the crowd
about Ser Victor's old disgrace:
evicted by the Duellists
and now back in this honored place.

Ser Victor grunted rudely
and brandished a rusty blade,
a huge two-handed sword which
by his evil had been made.

Ser Martel blanched at Victor's skill,
but still he stood his ground.
And when the Chamberlain called the start
their footsteps were the only sound.

[Bertram glances interestedly at Punzel.]

Then loud their swords together clanged
and hushed the crowd did fall,
for Good and Evil struggled there
before them in the Hall.

[Sir Bragi shuts his pair of blue eyes.]

Then with a lunge, a feint, a twist,
with subtle movement of his wrist,
with one hand curled into a fist,
Ser Martel fought in wintry mist.

[Sir Bragi smiles.]

But Victor did his moment pick
to play a most dishonored trick
and struck Martel with mighty kick
to cost the hero's sword its nick.

[Sir Alrik grins appreciatively.]
[Bertram nods approvingly.]

'Twas not long after that foul deed
that Savory's sword found Martel's arm.
So Victor would the victor be,
though lacking mannered charm.

[Launfal relaxes.]
[Sir Alrik sighs silently.]

Then all throughout the castle rooms
the epic story flew
of Martel's bravery 'gainst his foe
when his sword skills were but new.

And all the gentles whispered then
about the coming day
when Martel's skill would grow so great
that he would win the fray.

[Sir Bragi smiles.]

For though he lost the battle there
on that cold wintry e'en,
his strength and honour won the war
for Vivienne, our Queen.

Elea speaks quietly, "Good Sers, gentle Seras, gracious Lords and honorable
Prince Bertram... this poem is a dark tale of horror in honor of the darkest
time of the year. It deals with something most of us have experienced before...
a nightmare dream. I call it: Running..."

Sir Alrik gazes at Elea.
Bertram raises his pair of arched eyebrows.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Elea recites:

She breathes as if she is running in fear.
She flees fast from Its' unwavering sight
through the unending blackness of the night.
Panting hard, eyes wide, throat constricting tight
she prays this is only a horrible nightmare flight.

Sensing the monster more than seeing it near
closing in, claws ripping, heightening the fear.
Fleeing through the endless ebon halls clear,
on the darkest of nights - the death of a year.

[Sir Bragi watches Elea.]
[Gilliam gulps softly.]

Sunset hair flies behind her as she hears the sound
of a hungry, wanting, needing Evil unbound.
Stumbling, she falls to the hard, blackened ground,
then discovers a new landscape has been found.

[Launfal blinks.]
[Bertram listens intently.]

Endless halls, now the dark horror forest scene,
filled with hidden monsters and grabbing branches green.
Running to escape this nightmare monster dream...
she sees Its shadow through the hazy, lazy steam.

[Bertram begins to examine Elea.]
[Sir Alrik raises his pair of straight eyebrows.]

Hearts abound as she sees the thing for which she prayed -
a door that promises sweet escape from this trap laid.
Through the portal unknown she praises the sudden aid,
Then the door is closed and she discovers - she is betrayed.

[Bertram nods appreciatively.]
[Sir Alrik nods gravely.]

Underground maze of tunnels long, fills her with consternation.
She finds it to be her secret, horrified, deadly foundation.
Realizing the scene change and its' familiar configuration,
hope springs eternal - this must be just her imagination.

There is no doubt, it is nothing more than a horrible dream.
She stands her ground, facing her fear, the warrior queen.
It comes now - out of the darkness and through the steam,
with massive body, fangs and claws a-gleam.

[Launfal listens confusedly.]
[Sir Bragi smiles at Elea.]

No more will she flee this imaginary fiend and Its pitiful charade.
No more believing the horrible realities of the mind It has made.
No more will she play a part in this sickening game as It bades.
No more to continue in this bloody, macabre masquerade.

But... she discovers much too late in this nightmare scheme,
that all these things really are exactly as they seem...
and silence falls heavy across the misty landscape dream,

[Elea pauses significantly.]

with the last echoes of rending flesh...

[Elea breathes softly.]
[Elea glances respectfully at Bertram.]

...and her final scream.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

worn in a ponytail, and fair skin. He is wearing a rosette, a white cape, a
blue tunic, a pair of white hose and a pair of blue shoes.

Iuri says, "A Marrach sonnet."
Bertram nods.
Sir Bragi smiles at Iuri.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Iuri recites:

With sword in grasp, or quill in wearied hand,
We toil towards a purpose for a life
That's circumscribed in wint'ry fairyland,
Like bees that dare not leave their granite hive.
Yet cent'ries hence the walls will still stand stern -
But only they, for we will long be gone -
And mighty spruce will once again return,
Entombing them in forests halcyon.

[Sir Alrik gazes at Iuri.]

And then one day, perhaps, a shepherd lost
May come across this ancient granite maze,
Across our statues, weathered and enmossed,
Defiance chiseled on each marble face,
And he will ponder - wherefore did they live?
And for what purpose did they love and grieve?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

titled. Mine is.. ahm.. In Honor."

Sir Alrik gazes gravely at Pikewaddle.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Pikewaddle recites:

I am but a simple man
Who would please you with a tale
Of courtly love and courtly life.
Pray forgive me if I fail.

[Bertram nods dismissively.]
[Sir Bragi smiles encouragingly.]

Though winter grips the castle walls
And clouds cover the sky
We bask in warm and royal glow
Of our Queen's most gracious eye.

[Sir Alrik nods.]

And underneath her serene gaze
Do poets try their art
And hope to sway with words of grace
Some noble lady's heart.

[Bertram nods.]
[Sir Alrik smiles softly.]

For what in life is there to seek
If not a lady's hand?
And chaste lips that ne'er quite do meet
Though passion's flame be fanned.

[Pikewaddle glances at Dolfin.]
[Dolfin grins broadly.]

With grace and charm and elegance
Do the Lords and ladies dance
Silks and Lace adorn them each
Their beauty thus enhanced

[Sir Bragi smiles appreciatively.]
[Petris hums poetically.]
[Pikewaddle inhales deeply.]

They play the games of Courtly Life
Chess, charades, and more
Conversing on the deeds of state
And on heroic deeds of yore

[Bertram glances at Petris.]
[Sir Alrik glares at Petris.]
[Petris straightens.]

But midst all these wondrous things
One more wonderful shines through
The beauteous Queen Vivienne
From whom spring will come anew.

Unfading Amaranth, immortal flower,
The beast shall vanquish you never
Though it does all in it's power
And believes itself to be clever

[Bertram glances at his finger.]
[Sir Bragi smiles.]

It strives to make all endevour
Yet it shall not conquer you
Your colors will endure forver
Your beauty is everlasting too
Unfading Amaranth, remain true

Hark-en now to my winter-time tale,
As the Crystal spins in my web-silk pale,
Catches the light and catches the dark,
Look to the Crystal, look to the Heart,
Look past these walls of dreamstone gray,

[Sir Bragi watches Rhian interestedly.]

To lands of Ice where the North-wind plays,
Look to the caverns shimmering and white,

[Bertram yawns.]

Stars in the day and moons in the night,
Walk by the rivers froz-en through,
Sapphire flows of amethyst blue,
See such visions I spin on my loom,

Lithe as the starlight, graceful and fair,
Si-len-tly her spell she does weave,
As she flows through the tide of a moonlit sea,

[Sir Bragi smiles approvingly at Rhian.]

And the Crystal heart of Alune'Secari,

[Bertram eyes Sir Bragi disbelievingly.]

Goddess of Winter, Keeper of Dreams,
Shines down upon Her - our beautiful Queen,
Her smile is Wonder, though so rarely seen...

[Sir Alrik nods slowly.]
[Maria brushes her cheek.]

Hark-en now to my winter-time tale,

[Maria smiles tearfully.]

As the crystal dims and my threads grow pale,

[Bertram glances at Launfal's pocket watch.]

Yet the Winter's Moon drifts still in our dreams,
Such is the glamour of the Winter's Queen.
